We are trying to live these hectic days of Christmas time with a sense of expectation, preparation, and serenity. We can easily get caught up with the purely material aspects of life thinking that all of these preparations will make us and our families and friends happier. Deep down we do realize that this is not so and that real happiness can only come from spiritual things. We can name just a few of the more important ones: love, real friendship, forgiveness, and prayer.

ALIVE IN CHRIST CAMPAIGN
Last Sunday, November 15 you were not given the usual sermon or homily but a DVD message concerning our Alive in Christ Campaign and the reasons for this Diocesan initiative which is for the benefit of the Diocese and of our parish. I hope and pray that the presentation of this message gives you a better picture of the needs of our Diocese (and also of our parish) that arouse from our Diocesan Synod. This is a five year commitment and I’m sure you will pray over this decision in the next few weeks when you make your pledge.

Now that we have begun our normal routine (I wonder what is normal as a priest), I thought I would give you a preview of some activities that lie ahead.
Faith Formation (CCD) has started off well and classes are full. I see more parents are conscious that they and their children need more of God in their lives. We cannot be ignorant or put God aside. If anything, we must walk at the side of Jesus. We will be having special Children's Masses throughout the year. Soon we begin Advent, preparation for the Christmas Giving Tree, our English and Spanish Christmas Pageants, Christmas and then New Year.
We are also preparing for the "Alive in Christ" campaign which should be toward the beginning of December. More information will be available via the bulletin and our website.

Dear Parishioners,
I wonder how many of you have really read carefully last week’s bulletin in which I printed the annual report of the fiscal year 2008-09 ending June 30. I also mentioned to you that we as a parish, should be very grateful to God for the support you gave and that we ended up on a positive note notwithstanding the economic downturn. We were also able to allot $40,000 for charitable purposes, which is 8% of our offertory collections. At the same time, the St. Vincent de Paul Society spent $15,000 for the needy of our parish. I am sure that one day, St. Vincent de Paul will give you more details of how they have helped.

Happy Easter everyone! Alleluia! It sure feels good to say that. For non Christians, Easter means nothing, but for us, Easter means everything historically and religiously. We are Easter people and Alleluia is our song. This time we do not surrender to Roman soldiers, Jewish authorities, or friends who would betray us with a kiss. Rather, we surrender to something quite different, something beautiful, something holy, something life-changing. Today we surrender to the power unleashed through the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord. We surrender to the power of the Paschal Mystery, a power beyond our comprehension - a power strong enough to transform every person, every relationship, and every corner of the world.

Dear Parishioners,
At the beginning of every New Year, I always tell you that God has greatly blessed our parish and that He would give us special blessings during the coming year. This has been very true. Also, we cannot doubt the material blessings of these last six years and we now take them for granted. This has been due to your genuine love, interest and financial contributions. We have grown from a small mission parish of some forty years ago into a larger and changing community of Americans, Hispanics and Brazilians. Our church with its new and inspiring stain glass windows and beautiful stations of the cross looks much more like a house of prayer (as Jesus called the Temple) and the Blessed Sacrament now permanently and visibly located is the primary focus when you enter the church.
