Dear Parishioners,

Jesus as King

is something we rarely think about anymore. That's what this day helps us do. You see, when we reflect on Christ as our King it forces us to ask a very important question. Who is in charge? Who's in charge of my decisions, my priorities, my values, my actions, my very life? Who's calling the shots? It's hard to let someone else be in charge of us. It's one of the reasons why so many supervisors in the workplace are often viewed unkindly. No one likes to be told what to do. We want the decisions to be ours. We have the best answers, the best solutions. Our way is alwaysthe best way.The reason is, of course, that we've seen our bosses mess up from time to time. Managers occasionally use bad judgment and reasoning. Sometimes they don't do the proper prep work or don't have all the facts. From time to time they act out of selfish motives and not necessarily what's best for the company. And some people in charge rarely consider how their decisions will impact their subordinates. Of course, not all people in supervisory positions act this way. Many do a fine job and treat their employees fairly. But not all. We've all been in situations in which we thought we could do a much better job than the one in charge. But what about the other times, those instances when our bosses way was the best way, even though we had opposed him or her? I guess we don't remember those times quite as easily. When our supervisor is wrong we store it away for all eternity, but when we get it wrong we let it dissipate like dandelion seeds in the wind.

No one is right all the time…..except one…..God.

Oh, you knew that already. So did I. At least in my head I know it. Living it is a different story, which is why we celebrate this feast at the end of each Church year. To call Christ "King" or "Lord" or "Master" should have serious implications for how we live our lives, if we'd only trust and believe it at the deepest levels of our being.

So who’s in charge? Only one answer makes any sense.

Yet, even in the spiritual life, we want to call the shots. Although, when we need something from God we're more than happy to believe that God is all powerful, knowing, merciful, loving, etc. .. But when God expects, demands, or asks something of us, we don't quite buy into that same list of absolutes. We still trust ourselves a little more.

Yes, God's way is always the best way. Let me say that again. God's way is always the best way. God is so far beyond what we can completely understand or imagine. God has all the facts. He knows how everything can play out and will play out. He knows our strengths He gave them to us and our weaknesses He gave some of them to us too. More than anything else, God knows precisely what we need to be and in the fullest expression of who he created us to be.

In other words, the best life we can have, is the one where we walk hand in hand with Jesus, our Lord and King.

May each of us begin the next Church year with open hearts --- hearts open to change and new possibilities? May we have the courage to let go of our wants, desires, and stubbornness, and just let Christ the King be in charge.

Blessings be to you and your dear family, my good people of God!
