I wonder how many of you have really read carefully last week’s bulletin in which I printed the annual report of the fiscal year 2008-09 ending June 30. I also mentioned to you that we as a parish, should be very grateful to God for the support you gave and that we ended up on a positive note notwithstanding the economic downturn. We were also able to allot $40,000 for charitable purposes, which is 8% of our offertory collections. At  the same time, the St. Vincent de Paul Society spent $15,000 for the needy of our parish. I am sure that one day, St. Vincent de Paul will give you more details of how they have helped.
I’m convinced that what has helped us economize, be wise and prudent and be able to save money to use for good and necessary reasons, were many volunteered hours. There have been many of you who lost their jobs and had spare time to give to the church. I’ve also had a good number of persons who fulfilled service hours. If I did not have important work like “pulling weeds”, I sent them over to church to polish all the woodwork. Maybe that’s why the pews look polished.
I was brought up not to waste in order not to want; I would like you to help me by turning off lights, AC, and closing the doors, not throwing papers and trash on the church grounds, and not leaving gum and candy wrappers in church, much less chewing gum in church (It’s so horrible and disrespectful when I see people coming into church chewing gum and I always have to tell people coming for Weddings, Baptisms, and Quinceaneras to get rid of the gum and not stick it under the pews). This is what good manners in church means and parents should so educate their children. I want to thank those unnamed volunteers who after Mass pick up books, bulletins, and pamphlets, etc. and leave the church ready for the next Mass. I also have to praise those who use the parish halls and rooms and leave them clean and orderly.
If I were to mention all of those who have helped in any significant way, it would take up too much space. Perhaps in another blog, I can mention them and risk leaving someone out. Certainly, the leaders of the various ministries have given marvelous service this past year and I cannot thank them enough. These, like many of you are responding to the call of God by sharing your Time, Talent, and Treasure and I am convinced that you do so because you love your parish being strengthened by the gift of the Eucharist.
